Today I’m writing about a newish indie perfume company, The Porcelain Tub. I read a rave review of them and decided I had to try them out for myself. One cool thing is that not only do they make allegedly awesome perfume oils, they also donate part of their proceeds to various organizations that help save the oceans. This month (September 2016) the featured charity is Oceana, which makes science-based campaigns to change policy to help save our oceans.
Why do I talk about perfumes so much? Obviously because I like perfumes, but I find reviewing them to be relaxing and methodical. I also think it’s fun to guess what things smell like! I’m not very good at it yet, I guess things wrong all the time (see: Tituba, at the end). But I think I’m getting better and it’s a lot of fun!
Writing about perfumes also helps me collect my thoughts. I have a LOT of perfumes now, especially little sample vials. Writing down what I think of them helps me decide if I want to revisit them, or gift them, or get a full size. It also helps me organize a little. For example, I never reviewed sixteen92’s spring collection, and I didn’t realize until recently that I received 2 vials of Blanket of the Dark instead of A Thousand Times More Fair, which is sad because the latter sounds amazing (honeysuckle, plums, and peaches!).
Anyway, today I’ll be talking about sixteen92’s Fall 2016 collection. Claire, the lovely owner, based this collection on, fittingly, the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. Sixteen92 is one of my favorite perfumeries, and I love fall scents, so I’m really looking forward to this collection.
Today’s aging review is for Haus of Gloi‘s summer collection. Unfortunately I never actually reviewed this collection on the blog! So I don’t have notes to compare my thoughts. 😦 I guess we can consider this my official HoG summer review then.
I also used this opportunity to review the Tonics. In the spring, Haus of Gloi sometimes releases scents called “Tonic #x.” This year, they were #3, #4, and #5. These aren’t really aged (they’re about 6 months old), but I wanted to touch on them because they are thematically similar to the summer collection (lots of green notes), and because I haven’t given them a review here yet!
Today I’m going to continue my journey with seeing how my perfumes have aged, which I started here. Today I’ll be continuing with Haus of Gloi, but moving on to the samples I have. They sell perfume samples in cute little 1 mL tubes with an applicator wand. I have about 50 HoG perfume samples (!!!), so I’ll be splitting this up. Today I’m reviewing the rest of the general catalog, which is available year-round.
I’m obsessed with the idea of aging.
I love the idea of things changing and getting better and better over time. I think that it’s magical that things can grow and change in unpredictable ways, with only time.
Did you know that perfumes age? It’s true! Perfumes can change how they smell over the years, or even within weeks or days! I think that’s so fantastic, that they transform and morph over time.
I’ve decided that I want to see how some of my favorites have changed over time. I started buying indie perfumes around two years ago (!), so I have some oldies in my collection. My personal taste has aged (heh) over time too, and I think it’ll be fun seeing how my perfumes and my taste have changed.
I want to start with my Haus of Gloi full-size collection. This is partly because HoG was the first indie perfume/b&b company I really got into! Some of these are among my first purchases. It’s also because my HoG collection is fairly small, I have 9 full sized perfumes. I don’t really get their perfumes anymore, for various reasons, but I love their whipped soaps and pumpkin butters, so I snatch them up all the time still.
So without further ado…
Can we talk about how much fun it is to smell pretty things? I love it! I think I’ve been getting better at it, slowly honing my nose over time. It’s a great superpower to have, and it’s super convenient for tasting, too, since tasting and smelling are to intertwined! I love beer tasting; maybe I’ll bring that to the blog sometime, too!
Today I want to talk about sixteen92’s Summer 2016 collection. I adore sixteen92, they are one of my favorite perfume and bath/body companies. I was a member of their Circle for a year (which is basically a deal where you are among the first to get samples for each of their collections!), but unfortunately could not renew this year due to budgeting issues. 😦 But I do have the summer sample set, and I’m planning on getting the fall sample set (it comes out on Wednesday, August 24th at noon EST/11 am CST!).
